Tags & Metadata

Tags and metadata enable you to organize your monitored environments in a meaningful way.

• Tags in Dynatrace are basically labels or markers
• Metadata are key/value pairs that are inherent to any monitored entity.

Metadata are mainly used for defining extra information for entities while tags are used for organizing entities. You can also create tags based on metadata

Uses

• Filtering lists
• Defining which entities you want to include in a Data explorer chart or for dashboard filtering.
• Specifying where to send problem notification based on problem context in alerting profiles.
• Defining custom alerts.
• Accessing metric data via the REST API.
• Finding and inspecting monitoring results via Dynatrace search.
• Defining a maintenance window.

Types

• Manually applied tags
• Automatically applied tags

Manually Applied Tags

Once you’ve created a tag, select it from the list to tag your services, process groups, or hosts. Alternatively, you can add tags directly from individual service, process-group, and host pages.

Automatically applied tags

Rule-based tags behave just like manually-applied tags, except they’re applied automatically to new entities that match defined rules.
