Observability As A Code

I see Monitoring as Code as the codification of the monitoring capabilities used to determine whether a service is healthy and meeting its expected reliability objectives.

Examples include:

• Alerting rules
• Metric thresholds
• SLIs
• SLOs
• Error budgets
• Synthetic monitors
• Availability checks
• Prometheus rules
• Health checks
• Notification policies

Instead of an engineer manually creating a production alert through a UI, the monitoring definition can be:

Versioned → Reviewed → Tested → Approved → Deployed

alongside the application or platform lifecycle.
